:'(

A simple single-tear sad face emoticon cannot express the sorrow the world is feeling right now. Ms. Estelle Getty, whose portrayal of Sophia on the best sitcom of all time, The Golden Girls, has inspired at least one Anti DC blog post, has died. She was 84 and suffered from advanced dementia. She will be missed greatly on at least six of Earth's seven continents, according to her son, who spoke with the Associated Press.

"She was loved throughout the world in six continents, and if they loved sitcoms in Antarctica she would have been loved on seven continents," her son, Carl Gettleman, said. "She was one of the most talented comedic actresses who ever lived."

Carl is underestimating Estelle's prowess. As far as I'm concerned, she will be missed not only on all seven continents, but throughout the entire cosmos. Her status as my elder e-inspiration (enspiration?) knows no bounds and she will live on forever. RIP, Estelle, and thank you for being a friend.

I just poured one out for her. So sad.

In college, I watched GG every night with my roomies. I think a little bit of my innocence just died.

Wow. I'm in shock. She had great delivery. She certainly made the world a lighter place.

Ahh the good times I've had with Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and, of course, Sophia... Strangely, or perhaps not, I remember relating to these bitches at the tender age of eight.

I know! She was a classic!

I'm a recent fan of your site and it's been cool, but since you broke the news of Estelle Getty's death to me (for real, this is where I first read it) and posted such an honorable tribute, you've graduated to "awesome" status. I've never figured out exactly why, but Golden Girls was one of my favorite shows during my childhood. My friends and I are still more likely to be found arguing about which one of the Golden Girls we represent than which one of the Sex and the City ladies we resemble. Whatever, we're all slutty like Blanche and Samantha, but still. We all aspire to be as sassy and witty as Sophia.

I'm the same way! I used to talk about Golden Girls with my grandmas and how awesome of a show it was! We've always sort of been a Sophia bunch because we're a bunch of assholes, but you can imagine being from Minnesota, the kinds of Rose jokes I got and still get to this day. (Btw, there is, as far as I know, no town named St. Olaf. There is, however, a college called St. Olaf. It's in the same town as Carleton -- Northfield, Minn.)

Anyway, thanks for the kudos. I'm glad you found something redeeming in the shambles of this blog!

:'( -- one more collective single tear for Ms. Getty...

As you know I loved the "little grandma" and all the girls. Funny thing is now, I'm a Golden Girl for sure so I'll try and carry out Sophia's tradition.
